Common Senses - Spring Arts Festival
May 1, 2009 - Doors Open at 5:30 p.m.

Drama, creative writing, fine art, and film are just a few of the forms of art that will be included this year at the Spring Music Concert and Fine Arts Night, which is taking place May 1st at Chapel Rock Christian Church.

This event will not only showcase the music department but also all of the other arts that Covenant has to offer such as poetry, drama, fine art, computer art, film, journalism, and much more. The night has been thoroughly planned and has been an immense task to put together. The teachers in charge of fine arts thought it would be great to have one event for everyone. The idea came out of combining the Fine Arts Awards with the Spring Music Concert.

The evening will begin at 5:30 when artwork from various classes will be on display in the lobby with provided refreshments, followed by a skit from the drama department and poetry readings from the creative writing class. At seven o’clock all of Covenant music groups plan to perform: the Concert Band, Concert Choir, Treble Ensemble, String Ensemble, and Chamber Chorus.

When sophomore Daniel Watson was asked about the concert he replied saying, “In Chamber Chorus, we’re juggling three difference performances at once: the Jazz Coffee House Concert, ISSMA, and the Spring Concert” He continued to say that Blosser challenged the class daily with his great personality and music skills. “I’m really excited about this; hopefully we’ll be able to give the audience our best show.”

Art teacher Theresa Wisehart has been a part of making the night come to life as well. “[The night] is allowing my senior students to show off their work,” she said. However the work displayed will not be limited to only seniors. All of Wisehart’s classes will be represented.

Digital Design teacher Danni Brayer also said, “It is easier to have these different events together, especially because of the end of year schedule. It’s a way of making the arts come together.” Brayer mentioned that she had a few upperclassmen put in their work from her advance digital design class. She also hoped that next year some of her student’s work from the digital media class would be able to be displayed.

David Trujillo, the Senior Bible teacher as well as the Film and Dialogue teacher had planned on having some of the work from his class being viewed. Immediately following the concert, there will be a few short film screenings from some of the seniors. Senior Garret Hoover commented on the classes saying, “I can’t really say enough about them. Senior Art has provided me to produce a great and deep portfolio for college and further my personal explorations in art itself. Film has inspired me and has really lit a fire in me to study film and art in college.”

Hoover went on to say, “In Film, Trujillo has put together a fantastic course study covering Film as Art and then the history and genre development of the medium. All of which is foundational and completely at the core of understanding and appreciating film as a significant art form.”

Music lovers, film fanatics, and artists alike should be sure to make plans to attend. A lot is in store. Blosser sees the evening as an important part of covenant’s mission. “I think the arts have a lot to do with understanding humanity,” he said, “It is a good way of connecting with others and with Christ.”
