Required & Elective Course Offerings
Covenant welcomes homeschool students as an important part of our student body. College credit, participation in clubs and performance classes, and being a part of a vibrant school setting have motivated many students to choose Covenant. Students are considered part-time at Covenant if they take four classes or fewer. Students must demonstrate that they meet prerequisites for the classes in which they want to participate. Although full-time students get priority for class scheduling, we work to schedule classes that are convenient for the part-time student. The cost of part-time attendance is $600 per class per semester, plus book rental fees.
Advanced Placement (AP)
Students who study college-level material and score well on the standardized AP test over that material can earn advanced placement, college credit, or both, depending on the policy of the college they attend. For more information on the benefits of AP classes, see
Collegeboard.com.
Covenant offers the following AP classes: Calculus, Chemistry, Physics, Statistics, U.S. History, English Literature, English Language, Music Theory, and Art History.
Music Lessons
Mr. Dan Blosser teaches weekly, private voice lessons year round. For more information, email
Dan Blosser.
Mrs. Barbara Summers teaches private violin or viola lessons during the school year. For more information, email Barbara Summers.
Art Lessons
Mrs. Theresa Wisehart offers after-school art lessons for homeschool students in grades two through eight. Beginning in September, lessons are Tuesdays from 4 - 5 pm, and the cost is $6 per session per student. Please email
Theresa Wiseheart for more information.
Spanish Lessons
Mr.
Andy Goodwin offers summer and school-year tutoring as his schedule allows. He also offers intensive conversational Spanish courses for adults during the summer. His fees and requirements are as follows:
Tutoring: $30/hour for one-on-one, $25/hour per individual for groups of 2-5, and $20/hour per individual for groups of 6-10. High school age or above with some background in studying Spanish (i.e., currently taking or have taken classes).
Conversational Spanish courses: $100/person, minimum 10 people in a group. This ten-hour class will meet either 2 hours/day once a week for 5 weeks or 2 hours/day, each weekday, for one week. No previous background in studying Spanish is required for this entry-level course.
PSAT Test
Administered in October, the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is a standardized test that provides helpful practice for the SAT test. Although the PSAT test scores do not count for college admission, the scores are used to determine National Merit Scholarships for students who take the test as juniors. For more information, please see
Collegeboard.com.
At Covenant we have our full-time students take the test as sophomores “just for practice” and again as juniors for scholarship qualification. Homeschoolers who would like to test at Covenant should contact Erin Oppy early in the school year.
College Fair
On Thursday, September 23, 2010, we will be hosting our annual College Fair. Several colleges will be here to share information about their institutions, and a financial aid session will be offered. This is a great opportunity for students and parents to ask questions about majors, discuss scholarship opportunities, and pick up an application. Homeschool students who would like to attend should register by emailing
Erin Oppy.
College Reps Lunch Visits
Each year about 40 colleges, universities, professional schools and military branches visit Covenant. College representatives set up their displays and are available in the Commons during lunch hours—11:30 a.m. through 1:00 p.m. Please click here for a schedule of these visits for the current school year.
Into the Wild
"Into the Wild" is a one-day retreat for 6th - 8th graders about finding God in high school. From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on April 10, 2010, at Covenant Christian High School, middle schoolers will play, learn and explore important high school questions. Covenant is hosting this event to give students a first taste of the big ideas of Covenant and to prepare students to see Christ in all of their academics, whether they attend public, private, or home school. Brian Hudson will host a free parent seminar at 5:00 p.m. that evening for parents of participants entitled, "Sending Them into the Wild: How To Help Your Students Find God in High School."
Due to a generous sponsorship, the cost of the retreat is only $10 per student. That includes 2 meals, all activities and a t-shirt.
Check out more information and sign up your student at Into The Wild.
Math Scavenger Hunt
Each March Mrs. Jane Taylor and her students host a Math Scavenger Hunt for teams of middle school students from Christian schools in the area. They would like to invite home schoolers to send teams as well! The contest is geared to 7th and 8th graders, but a team could include one 6th grade student, if necessary. This event is designed to challenge strong math students, so keep that in mind when selecting teams.
Each team of three students will complete a course by solving 10 - 12 mathematical problems of varying difficulty. The questions will draw mainly from arithmetic, basic geometry and algebra concepts, probability, and logic and reasoning, all geared to challenge a talented middle school student. Calculators will NOT be allowed. The solution to each problem will lead the team to the next room and the next question. The team that completes the course in the fastest amount of time will be declared the winner.
A creative theme, friendly competition, refreshments, and a prize ceremony make for a fun evening. Please plan to join us! Email Jane Taylor for more information.
Clubs
Students at Covenant can participate in these clubs: math, civics, Spanish, speech, drama, writing, rocket team, lacrosse (girls), volleyball (boys), and student council. Email
Erin Oppy for more information.

The “Full P.T.” Experience
By Natalie Grimes, ‘10
From the moment I stepped through the doors of CCHS, I felt overwhelmed with the pride and joy of being a Covenant student. I am a sixteen-year-old homeschooled junior, and this past semester I decided to take a class at CCHS. Therefore I am a P.T. student, or a part-time student. I remember the very first day walking in and trying to get my locker open and get to class on time. I got a few looks, as people wondered who this new red-headed girl was, but in all, the students were very welcoming. That first week I had several complete strangers, who are now my friends, help me open my locker. The students were not the only people who were welcoming and helpful. The staff also made me feel at home. My teacher,Mr. Fishburn, helped me catch up quickly with a few things I had missed, and he was always available before or after class if I needed extra help. The office staff helped me get my books and paper work in line, and they always greeted me every morning with a big smile and cheerful “good morning.” Being only a part-time student, I don’t always get the whole “Covenant experience,” but I get enough to still love it. The school isn’t perfect, but the encouraging Christian atmosphere keeps me accountable. It is a true blessing to be able to go here part-time. My family and I have felt no pressure to enroll fully, or to take more classes. Students and staff alike are very welcoming to me as a homeschooler. True, at first I had to deal with a little stereotyping of being the “unsocialized homeschooler,” but it didn’t take long for them to realize I am anything BUT unsocial. Covenant has been a place where I can come and learn, make new friends, and grow in my faith. God has allowed our country to bless us with the freedom to have both home schools and private Christian schools. Thanks to Covenant I am able to take advantage of both of these blessings. I guess you could say I have the best of both worlds.
