History

Blessed is an understatement when it comes to describing the rich history which God has written for Covenant Christian High School

In 1994, Covenant Christian High School was only a dream in the minds and hearts of a few parents living on the Westside of Indianapolis. Their desire was that their children would attend a school where they could develop not just academically and athletically, but also spiritually.

By 1995, their dreams had become a reality and for the first time a class of 16 students met in the basement of Chapel Rock Christian Church. With fervent prayer and the hard work of a staff of 8 teachers, Karen Schwartzkopf, and administrator Jim Spencer, the school pulled through its first year. It was Mr. Spencer, a career high school teacher of 32 years, who created an ethos of education which was centered on giving young men and women the ability to pursue a Christ-centered worldview.

In 1996, through the generosity of a local businessman, and a 21 acre donation of land from Chapel Rock Christian Church, Covenant began construction of a beautiful $8 million facility. It was also in this year that the school gained accreditation from the state of Indiana.

In 1997, the students were able to move into their brand new school.

In May of 1999, Covenant had its first graduating class. The graduation ceremony was unique; not only was it a celebration of the students' completion of high school, but also a testimony to what God had done.

2003 was an award winning year for Covenant. Being named the “Best Christian Place to Work” by Christianity Today was a blessing of recognition. In addition, Covenant’s own Theresa Wisehart was awarded the Prelude Award and Andy Goodwin was awarded the Chrystal DeHaan Project “E” Award. Furthermore, Covenant gained accreditation from ACSI (The Association of Christian Schools International).

Today Covenant features a staff of over 50 employees, 26 of whom are faculty members and a student body of over 370. Most of Covenant’s graduates go on to attend many colleges and universities around the country such as Wheaton, Asbury, Milligan, Manchester, Rose Hulman, Taylor, Boston University, Purdue, and Calvin College. Covenant’s most recent graduating class was offered $1.5 million in scholarships, but chose to accept close to $800,000 in merit based scholarships.

Already Covenant is looking forward to adding on to the facility to further its ability to offer excellence in education. Yet while the size of Covenant’s campus may be growing, Covenant remains committed to its 400 person cap on its student body. It is the hope of Covenant that it will be able to continue enlightening minds with Christ-centered education, inflaming hearts with passion, and transforming lives with the many gifts God has given us.
